June 15, 2023Auto-truck is bridging the gap towards the adoption of e-mobility in Africa.
Two- and three-wheelers play a significant role in the economies of many African countries, including Kenya and Tanzania. In Kenya, the number of registered vehicles of this type exceeds 2 million. Similarly, in Tanzania, two- and three-wheelers constitute 59% of the nation's registered vehicles, with the total number of registrations surpassing 1.2 million.
These vehicles are used by low to middle-income earners for transporting passengers and goods. Their popularity has expanded to large distributors such as Coca-Cola. This trend has resulted in new revenue streams for the East African community, with the growing adoption of such vehicles in urban and rural areas. Two and three-wheelers are pivotal to the transportation landscape in this region.
Auto-Truck is a company at the forefront of transitioning to electric-powered two- and three-wheeled vehicles. In particular, Auto-Truck is a government-certified electric mobility company committed to reducing road congestion, carbon emissions, and noise pollution caused by transportation.
Since its establishment in 2015, Auto-Truck has been developing electric mobility prototypes to showcase as proofs of concept. Their initial focus was on electric handcarts, a preferred mode of transportation for small business owners, and have since progressed to electric three-wheelers and two-wheelers.
Auto-Truck’s efforts are underway to integrate E-Mobility technology into universities and technical vocational training institutions. This move will upskill and introduce skills for the future, ensuring that students are prepared for the changing transportation landscape. Additionally, there are plans to franchise charging stations, which will bridge the gap to E-mobility uptake. Together, Auto-Truck’s initiatives make it an important organisation in East Africa’s transition away from fossil fuel vehicles. As Dorcas Wamalwa, Auto-Truck’s Business Development Director, stated, “Our mission is centred around improving capacity and positively impacting the environment”.
Auto-Truck was selected as one of the 12 DIGILOGIC smart logistics challenge winners. DIGILOGIC provides technical assistance to Auto-Truck and opportunities for their ideas to reach international audiences.
