DIGILOGIC participated in the panel “Maritime & digital economy: from logistics 2.0 to ocean preservation, are startups new drivers of maritime innovation?” organized by the Emerging Valley event on 8 April, 2021.

Adriano Mauro, Managing Director of Prototipi, based in Lagos (Nigeria) and leading DIGILOGIC dissemination and communication activities, contributed to the discussion moderated by Szymon Jagiello, Forbes Africa correspondent.

The discussion kicked off with Adriano presenting the 5 most relevant changes faced by the logistics industry in Africa in the last decade, which he summarised as follows:

• The transport and logistics industries are now in a perpetual state of disruption caused by the pandemic, trade policies, extreme weather.
• Evolving demands for urban logistics: raising megacities such as Cairo, Lagos, Nairobi pose new challenges.
• The intra-Africa trade is still well below other continents intra-trade, hopes are in the AFCTA agreement, coming into force this year.
• The digitalization has reinvented logistics, with new light assets business models and new players and startups challenging the incumbents.

How technology has been disruptive in the African logistics market and what are the challenges and how the collaboration between Digital Innovation Hubs in Europe and Africa can facilitate the uptake of technology has been well explained by Abdur Rahim is the CEO of WAZIUP, which developed an affordable and adaptable end-to-end IoT solution aims to accelerate social innovation and empower local IoT entrepreneurship. Driss Jabar brought his experience as entrepreneur, founder of CloudFret the first solution to optimize returns to empty trucks, with the aim of reducing the carbon footprint of the road freight transport sector. Adriano concluded introducing DIGILOGIC upcoming activities to support innovators interested in developing smart logistics solutions both in Africa and in Europe: DIGILOGIC eLearning platform and early next year DIGILOGIC Challenges.
